How to Wear Colors Outside Your Season (5 Tricks)
Here's how to wear colors outside your season: keep them away from your face, pair them with a palette color up top, use makeup to balance them, wear them in small doses through accessories and prints, and choose the version of that color closest to your season. Your season is a guide, not a ban. With these five tricks you can wear almost any color you love.
If you're not even sure which of your favorite colors are "outside" your season, Swatch Fan tells you your season and checks any top, dress or lipstick for yes, close or skip. Find my colors
Why you can still wear any color
Color analysis tells you which colors do the most for your face. It doesn't say other colors are forbidden. A color that "washes you out" only does that when it sits right next to your skin and takes up a lot of space.
Think of it like this:
- Near your face, big area: your season matters a lot
- Near your face, small area: it matters a little
- Away from your face: it barely matters
So the real question isn't "can I wear this?" It's "where and how much?"
What colors wash me out?
Colors that wash you out usually miss your season in one of three ways:
- Wrong temperature: a cool person in mustard, or a warm person in icy grey
- Wrong depth: a light person in heavy black, or a deep person in pale pastel
- Wrong brightness: a soft person in neon, or a bright person in dusty beige
Once you know which one is happening, you know which trick fixes it.
Trick 1: Keep it away from your face
This is the easiest fix. Wear the off-palette color on your bottom half.
- Mustard trousers instead of a mustard sweater
- A black skirt instead of a black turtleneck
- Orange sneakers instead of an orange tee
- A bright coat worn open over a palette-color top
Can all color seasons wear black?
Yes, this way. Black pants, black shoes and a black bag work on everyone. The trouble only starts when black sits under your chin in a big block. If you're a Summer or Spring, wear black on the bottom and a palette color up top, or open the neckline with a V-neck so less black touches your face.
Trick 2: Pair it with a color from your palette
Put a palette color between your face and the off-palette color.
- A collared shirt in your color under a sweater that isn't
- A scarf in your palette over an off-palette coat
- A palette-color tee under an open cardigan
The color closest to your face "wins," so people see you in a flattering shade first.
A quick example
Say you're a Soft Summer and you love a camel coat. Add a dusty rose or soft grey scarf and your face reads Soft Summer, while the coat does its thing. Need ideas for which neutrals to use as that buffer? See neutrals for Soft Summer.
Remembering which of your clothes are in your palette, which are close and which are a stretch is hard to do in a fitting room. Swatch Fan keeps a saved closet of your color checks, so you can look back at what was a "yes" and pair it with the pieces that were "close." Find my colors
Trick 3: Fix it with makeup
Makeup can bring back the color an off-palette shade drains away.
- Too cool for you? Add a warm blush and a peachy or brick lip.
- Too warm for you? Add a pink or berry lip and cool-toned blush.
- Too dark and heavy? A brighter lip and a little highlight lift your face.
- Too bright and loud? A bolder lip or defined brows help your face hold its own.
A lipstick from your palette is the single strongest fix. It puts your season right at the center of your face.
Not a makeup person?
Try earrings or glasses frames in your best metal and color. They sit close to your face and do a similar job.
Trick 4: Use accessories and prints
Small doses of an off-palette color are almost always fine.
- A bag, belt or shoes in the color
- A patterned shirt where the color is one of several
- A watch strap, hair clip or socks
Prints are your friend
In a print, your eye blends the colors. If a floral has your off-palette color and two colors from your palette, the whole print can still look good on you. Look for prints where the background color is in your palette.
Trick 5: Pick the version closest to your season
Almost every color comes in shades that suit each season. Instead of skipping a color, find your version of it.
| Color you love | Warm & bright (Spring) | Cool & soft (Summer) | Warm & deep (Autumn) | Cool & bold (Winter) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Green | Kelly green | Sage-blue green | Olive, moss | Emerald |
| Pink | Coral pink | Dusty rose | Terracotta pink | Fuchsia |
| Blue | Turquoise | Powder blue | Teal | Cobalt |
| White | Ivory | Soft white | Cream | Optic white |
| Black | Navy or dark chocolate | Charcoal | Espresso brown | True black |
Borrow from your sister season
Your sister season shares your strongest trait but has the opposite temperature. Soft Summer and Soft Autumn are sisters, and so are Deep Winter and Deep Autumn. Colors from your sister season are the safest "outside" colors, because they match your depth or softness. If you're Deep Autumn, see neutrals for Deep Autumn for bases that also work with Deep Winter borrowings.
What season colors should I wear most of the time?
Aim for a simple ratio: most of what's near your face in your palette, and the rest is where you play. If a color keeps making you feel great even though it's "off," that's worth listening to. Confidence counts.
Wear outside your season, but check first
Swatch Fan gives you your season and your 12 named colors with hex codes from quick yes/no questions. Then its color check reads a top, dress or lipstick from your camera or a shop screenshot and says yes, close or skip, plus the palette color it's nearest to. That "close" answer is exactly when these tricks come in handy. It's free to start.
FAQ
Can you wear colors not in your season?
Yes. Your season shows what flatters your face most, not what's banned. Keep off-palette colors away from your face, use them in small doses, or pick the shade of that color closest to your season.
How do you wear colors that wash you out?
Put a palette color between the washed-out shade and your face, like a scarf or collar. Add a lipstick from your palette. Or wear the color on your bottom half, where it matters much less.
Can all color seasons wear black?
Everyone can wear black away from the face, like pants, shoes and bags. Winters look best in black near the face. Other seasons can swap in navy, charcoal or deep brown for tops, or open the neckline so less black sits near the skin.
What is a sister season in color analysis?
A sister season shares your main trait (light, deep, soft or bright) but has the opposite temperature. Soft Summer and Soft Autumn are sisters, as are Light Spring and Light Summer. Their colors are the easiest ones to borrow.
What colors wash me out, and how can I tell?
A color washes you out when your skin looks grey, sallow or shadowy next to it, or when you notice the color before your face. Test in daylight by holding the color under your chin next to one you know works. The difference usually jumps out.
